Neck & Arm Pain Q & A

What Causes Neck Pain?

Seven small vertebrae in your neck provide a full range of motion while also supporting the weight of your head — a combination that makes your neck especially vulnerable to injuries and degenerative disease.

Neck pain can be caused by:

  • Whiplash
  • Sprains and strains
  • Herniated disc
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Arthritis
  • Pinched nerve (radiculopathy)
  • Narrowed spinal canal (stenosis)

If you spend a lot of time using computers, smartphones, or other digital devices, you’re also at risk for developing a type of neck strain called tech neck.

What Causes Arm Pain?

Arm pain often occurs due to:

  • Fractures
  • Pinched nerves
  • Joint degeneration or injury
  • Inflammatory conditions (tendonitis or tennis elbow)
  • Soft tissue injuries (sprains, strains, and overuse injuries)

In many cases, arm pain originates in your neck as a compressed nerve, and then the pain, tingling, and numbness radiate down the nerve through your arm.

No matter what causes your neck or arm pain, our team at One Accord Physical Therapy helps you get active, stay active, and live pain-free with cutting-edge treatment that targets the root of your pain.

How are Neck and Arm Pain Treated?

Depending on the underlying cause of your neck and arm pain, the first line of treatment may include modifying your activities and temporarily immobilizing your neck or arm.

For most causes of neck and arm pain, hands-on manual therapy, prescriptive exercises, and medical massage effectively alleviate pain, reduce inflammation, and promote healing.

The same therapies are also great for restoring strength and movement when you’re ready to rehabilitate a fracture.

Our team of experts at One Accord Physical Therapy specializes in numerous manual therapy techniques. After evaluating your condition and determining the cause of your pain, we work with you to develop a treatment plan that incorporates the type of therapy that’s best for your condition.

As one of Arizona’s only teaching orthopedic clinics, One Accord Physical Therapy has specialists you can count on to provide the most recent evidence-based approach for your care.

Your treatment may include therapies such as:

  • Joint mobilization
  • Muscle Energy Techniques
  • Spinal manipulation techniques
  • Dry needling
  • Prescriptive exercises
  • Therapeutic exercises

All of our specialists are certified in spinal manipulation and manual therapy, but only one provider is assigned to work with you throughout your treatment. Your dedicated manual therapy expert is available to listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and make sure your recovery goes smoothly.

In addition to your on-site therapy, your specialist gives you tips on how to continue your therapy at home, including teaching you about exercises that are safe, as well as those to avoid.
